Call of Duty Week: Day Four

And so we glide past the half-way point of the series, cruising to a halt at day four and along with it, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

So, back onto Infinity Ward for the latest entry into the series. And wow, what an entry. Whilst it does revert back to the more traditional, linear mission structure, it somewhat makes up for it by having very few rubbish levels.

Positive
  • It’s consistently entertaining.
  • The first sniper mission is great.
  • Captain Price!
  • Captain Price’s moustache!
  • With that sniper mission and the AC-130 mission they try different styles of missions beyond the normal run-and-gun.
  • There are a lot of explosions.
  • The story is actually fairly decent for such a bombastic, Hollywood-style shooter.
  • The best juxtaposition in any game ever.
  • The training mission was interesting.
  • The last mission was fun and ridiculous (in a good way though).

Negative
  • The last few missions were a bit rubbish.
  • Some of the missions were far too difficult (the TV station one, the second sniper mission and the one after that).
  • The core gameplay is essentially the same as the previous ones.
  • They sort of try too hard to be like a Hollywood blockbuster.
  • It ruined multiplayer shooters forever.
  • You fight in THE MIDDLE EAST. That’s not a country.

All in all, a pretty solid game then. Despite my reservations about the multiplayer (but whatever, loads of people love that stuff) the game is still fun and entertaining throughout. A solid purchase, not as good as the first two but certainly not as average as 3.
