As the adventurers began dusting themselves down, they noticed the large crowd which had gathered was drifting away. They followed, and soon arrived at the city bank, which seemed to have been turned into a temporary town hall.
As the members of the bank noticed the adventurers, a huge cheer, accompanied by a large amount of clapping, rose up from throughout the hall. When it finally died down, the adventurers could see that there were two people standing on tables, who seemed to have been in the middle of a debate when they entered.
Azazel asked a civilian next to them, "Who are those two men?"
The civilian, shocked at being addressed by a real life hero, stumbled through his reply;
"They're both...uh... running to be the new leader. The one on the left wants to ban outsiders and traders, whereas the guy on the right thinks that the only way to rebuild our empire is through help from others, mostly the Dwarves. Right now I think the guy on the right is favoured."
"He sounds like a sensible man." Intoned Wrex as the man scurried away.
"Really?" asked Azazel, "Sounded like a bit of an idiot to me."
"Not him, the candidate."
The travelers waited as the votes were counted, each giving there's to the second candidate.
"And the winner is... Mr.Verien!" There was a stunned silence as the first candidate took to the makeshift podium.
"Thank you, my friends. It is good to know you all voted for the right choice."
"He's lying."Said Erestor.
"How can you tell?" Muttered Azazel.
"He blinks a lot when he's lying." So intense was Erestor's concentration on Verien, that he almost missed the advisor from the tower slinking away along the top floor.
He quietly pushed his way through the crowd and peeked around the top of the stairs. Unfortunately, the advisor was looking towards the stairs, spotted Erestor and began to sprint to the window at the end of the hall. He burst out of it in a shower of broken glass, and landed straight into the waiting arms of Wrex. He grinned. Erestor then leaped out of the window, landed on Wrex as well, and sent the advisor skidding across the ground. He quickly jumped to his feet and proceeded to sprint away from the towering Dragonborn.
"You idiot!" Screamed Wrex.
"Don't worry," Erestor replied, drawing his bow, "I'll get him in the leg and then we'll see how fast he runs." He let his arrow loose, and it struck the runner squarely in the back.
"Nice shot." Wrex muttered sarcastically.
They ran up to the body, but it was soon clear that the arrow had struck the advisor clean through the heart. A passerby noticed and screamed. A large crowd had soon grown.
"This can't be good." Muttered Greg. "People, do not worry, we didn't mean to shoot this man." This, unsurprisingly, didn't really have the desired effect, as the crowd's murmuring grew more agitated.
"Couldn't we just kill them all?" Muttered Azazel, "It would make life so much easier."
"No, stop that." Replied Greg. "Trust us, he was not a good man." Still, the crowd grew angrier, and the travellers even saw some weapons being drawn.
"Look," shouted Azazel, "He was an evil man. He worked for Orcus, you know, the Prince of Destruction." There was some more murmuring from the crowd, until one brave woman shouted back, "Where's your proof then?" Azazel quickly turned around and began going through the man's pockets, much to the displeasure of the crowd. Eventually he found a note, written in ancient Supernal, meaning that he could only understand a very limited amount of words. He quickly worked some magic, and transformed the runes into Common.
"Look," he cried, "The message reads, and I quote, 'The deed is done, lord, the tower has been destroyed, and the vote was fixed. Your plan worked perfectly."
"You seriously think they're gonna fall for that?" Questioned Greg. Azazel replied with a shrug, but it seemed to satisfy the crowd, who's anger turned to indignation, and there was much clamouring for a re-vote.
After much more deliberation, the vote was finally carried out again, and the second candidate, a Mr. Vergoth was elected to be President. The travellers found him after the celebrations,
"Hey, do you have any jobs for us. This country's a dangerous place." Asked Azazel.
Vergoth surveyed them, and then replied, "No, but there's probably some less... stately work around, and I won't tell anyone about it." With that he left and the travellers were left considering their options.
Eventually, it was decided that they should find what had happened to the body, and for Wrex to use a ritual to try and question his ghost. After much deliberation, they found the body, on a funeral cart heading to the Dwarven city of Hammerfast.
